FiksGataMi is a citizen-powered reporting platform that allows residents in Norway to quickly and easily notify local authorities about issues in their communities — whether it’s potholes, broken streetlights, dangerous sidewalks, or illegal dumping. The service is open, free, and transparent, enabling a more responsive and participatory relationship between the public and those responsible for public spaces.

Built by the community, for the community

Originally inspired by the FixMyStreet project in the UK, FiksGataMi was launched as a fully Norwegian version tailored to local needs and municipalities. But what truly sets it apart is the community behind it: over 1,200 volunteers have contributed their time, code, translations, outreach, and testing to help build and maintain the platform.

Their efforts have made FiksGataMi a flagship example of how open source and civic tech can come together to strengthen democracy and improve everyday life.

"This is open digital infrastructure in practice — citizens taking ownership of how technology can serve society better."

How it works

Using FiksGataMi is simple:

  1. Find the location on the map.
  2. Submit a report describing the issue.
  3. Optionally add a photo for context.
  4. The report is forwarded to the appropriate municipality or road authority.
  5. Status updates are tracked publicly, ensuring accountability.

Because all reports are open and searchable, FiksGataMi also becomes a living map of public maintenance and attention — giving both citizens and authorities a clear picture of where improvements are needed most.

Why this matters

In a time when digital participation often feels limited to likes and comments, FiksGataMi demonstrates the power of actionable digital tools. By lowering the barrier to engagement and making feedback loops transparent, the project enhances trust and responsiveness in local governance.

Moreover, the platform is fully open source, which means any municipality, organization, or even other countries can adopt and adapt the technology for their own use. It’s a digital public good with global potential.

A growing ecosystem

FiksGataMi is part of the OpenSociety.no ecosystem — a growing collection of tools, datasets, and learning resources dedicated to strengthening civic participation through open technology. Alongside other initiatives like Creative Commons Norway and ObiOne.io, it shows what’s possible when we combine technology, openness, and a belief in collective action.

Want to get involved? Contribute code, suggest features, help with outreach, or share the service with your community. Every message sent through FiksGataMi is a small act of democracy.
